Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play Major League baseball outside of a segregated black league, in 1947. He became a living milestone for racial equality and changed the sport of baseball forever.

 Robinson broke the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. In later life, Jackie Robinson developed diabetes and heart disease and was almost blind by middle age. He died of a heart attack on October 24, 1972 at his home on 95 Cascade Road in North Stamford, Connecticut. He was only 53.
