Early recipes for meringue-topped desserts existed in Europe in the 18th century, while in the 19th century, Philadelphia's Mrs. Elizabeth Goodfellow, a renowned baker, is credited with popularizing the combination of lemon pudding and meringue in her pies. However, other theories attribute the invention to figures like Swiss baker Alexander Frehse or the botanist Emile Campbell-Browne in England.
