Black Troops

William Tecumseh Sherman occupied Atlanta. In series of battles around Chaffin's Farm in suburb of Richmond, Black troops captured entrenchments at New Market Heights, made gallant but unsuccessful assault on Fort Gilmer and helped repulse Confederate counterattack on Fort Harrison. Thirty-ninth U.S.C.T. won a Congressional Medals of Honor in the engagements.

One of the major contributors to the world of art and literature, Romare Bearden, was born on September 2, 1911 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Abolitionist, inventor, entrepreneur, James Forten was born in Philadelphia, PA, 1766

Professional baseball player, Frank Robinson was named MVP of the American League, 1966

1666 The Great Fire of London began in the shop of the King's baker. After burning for four days, more than 13,000 buildings had been destroyed.

1752 Tomorrow was September 14. The Gregorian Calendar went into effect in Great Britain and its colonies, to correct an accumulated 11 day discrepancy. Most of the rest of the world had switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar in 1582.

1865 John Macadam died (born 1827).  Australian (born in Scotland) chemist and politician. The Macadamia nut was named for him.

1870 Samuel Augustus Maverick died (born July 23, 1803). An American cattleman and politician. He didn't brand his cattle, and his name is the source of the term 'maverick' referring to an unbranded animals.

1912 The first Calgary Stampede is held, billed as the The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth, and The Last and Best Great West Frontier Days Celebration.

1929 Unilever was formed by the merger of British soap and margarine maker Lever Brothers and Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie.

1935 The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 hit the Florida Keys. Over 400 were killed and the Railroad to Key West was destroyed. It was the most powerful hurricane to ever hit the U.S., with winds estimated at 200 mph.

1964 Pepsi acquires the Tip Corp. including the rights to Mountain Dew soft drink.

1969 The first ATM is installed at the Chemical Bank in  Rockville Centre, New York.

1973 J.R.R. Tolkien died. Author of 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy.

1978 'Grease' by Frankie Valli was number one on the music charts.

1985 The wreckage of the British luxury liner 'Titanic' was located 73 years after it sank. This inspired a new interest in the menu and last meals that were served on the ship.
