Snow White 2
The following spring, a whisper, carried on the gentle winds that swept through the valleys and over the mountains, reached the ears of the neighbouring prince.
It spoke of a princess, fairer than any maiden, who lay in an eternal sleep, enshrined in a crystal coffin deep within the shadowed woods. His heart, which had long sought a love as pure as the dawn, felt an inexplicable pull, a desperate hope mingled with profound dread.
He rode for days, guided by the hushed reverence in the voices of those who pointed the way.
Finally, he found it: a small clearing, bathed in dappled sunlight, where the seven dwarfs stood as silent, sorrowful guardians. Before them, nestled amidst moss and wildflowers, was a coffin of exquisitely wrought glass, gleaming like a giant diamond.
Within, Snow White lay.
She was breathtaking, even in stillness. Her skin, like freshly fallen snow against the dark velvet pillow, her lips a gentle rosebud hue that seemed to promise breath, though none came.
The prince's heart constricted. Such beauty, snatched away by a cruel fate. He saw the genuine grief etched on the dwarfs' faces, the quiet sorrow in the eyes of the forest animals gathered respectfully around.
A fresh wave of grief washed over him, not for a stranger, but for a soul he felt he already knew, a dream unfulfilled.
He knelt beside the coffin, his hand trembling as he reached out to trace the cold glass over her cheek.
He recalled the tales of her kindness, her voice like birdsong, her spirit as bright as the morning sun, He couldn't bear to leave her trapped in this perpetual twilight.
Driven by a profound sorrow, and an intuitive, unbidden surge of love, he leaned forward. His lips, warm and tender, brushed against hers in a feather-light touch, a silent farewell to a beauty he could not save.
But as their lips met, a faint tremor ran through Snow White’s delicate form.
A gasp, soft as a butterfly's wing, escaped her lips.
Her eyelids, which had been still for so long, fluttered, then slowly, hesitantly, opened!
Her eyes, the colour of twilight, blinked, filled first with confusion, then dawning recognition as they met the prince's startled, hopeful gaze.
The spell, woven with cruel magic, shattered like brittle ice.
Snow White took a deep, shuddering breath, a wave of warmth rushing through her long-dormant limbs.
Snow White: Where... where am I?" she whispered, her voice a little reedy from disuse, but undeniably alive.
The clearing erupted. The dwarfs, who had stood frozen in disbelief, surged forward with cries of utter elation, tears streaming down their wizened cheeks.
Dwarfs: She's alive!
Dopey bounced on the spot, Grumpy actually cracked a smile, and Happy let out a whoop that echoed through the trees. The forest animals, too, chirped and chattered and scurried in happy circles, a symphony of joy.
The prince, still kneeling, felt an overwhelming wave of relief and pure, unadulterated joy.
Prince: Snow White! he breathed, gripping her hand gently.
Prince: You're awake! You're truly awake!
He helped her sit up, his gaze never leaving her face.
Prince: My dearest Snow White, he began, his voice thick with emotion…
Prince: I have sought you for so long… My kingdom awaits you!
Prince: Will you come with me, to my castle, and be my queen?
A gentle smile touched her lips, a radiant bloom after a long winter. She looked at the prince, then at the tearful, beaming dwarfs, and finally around the beloved forest.
Snow White: Yes, she whispered, a thousand times yes!
And so, with the dwarfs cheering and the animals dancing in their wake, the prince lifted Snow White onto his horse. Leaving behind the silent sentinel of the glass coffin, a testament to a dark past as they rode out of the forest and bathed in the golden light of the spring afternoon.
towards a future brimming with promise and enduring love.
Days later, they arrived at the prince's sprawling castle, perched majestically on a hill overlooking a prosperous valley. News of their return, and of Snow White's miraculous awakening, had spread like wildfire.
The castle gates swung open to reveal a jubilant crowd; banners fluttered from every turret, musicians played merry tunes, and the air was filled with cheers and applause. The people, eager to lay eyes on their future queen, marvelled at her beauty and the radiant happiness that now shone from her, banishing the last vestiges of her long sleep.
